Usually, by then it's too late to fix any issues. If you don't monitor your sound when recording, then you've no idea about the quality of the audio until you play it back afterwards. Anything that enables you to do this (namely, headphones or speakers) can be referred to as “studio monitors” – even if you're not recording or editing in an actual studio. If you're recording audio, and you can hear what's being recorded, as it's being recorded, then you are monitoring your sound.
